Goodbye and Thank You Very Much Mang Pablo Gomez!
I was deeply saddened with the news that Mang Pablo Gomez, the known story maker for komiks in its golden age and years after just died recently December 26. I was able to meet him in person last year when he gave his writing workshop (which is actually his last). I learned a lot from that experience though his ideas would not be appreciated by new writers. I was given a script of Mga Angel na Walang Langit (Angels without Heaven) which I still keep as an inspiration in writing. Now that I am also part of the komiks industry, I was looking forward in meeting Mang Pablo again to show my works and also seek consultation from him about stories from the past which is definitely rich in meaning and values. I knew that he would be at his twilight, since he is at the fragile age of 81, plus the fact that he still smokes. He is a very patient and silent person. He does not have a family of his own. And what he only have is his collection of komiks, magazines and other memorabilia that he shared to us during the workshop. He lives so simply and says that in writing he still uses the typewriter.
His works are still aired in TV like Juanita Banana, and other shows like Kampanerang Kuba, Petrang Kabayo and many more. He also shared to us about Carlo Caparas which he said was ungrateful after getting the fame and fortune. Though a newbie in the komik world, I also share the same sentiment about this.
I also gave a sample of my writing works to Mang Pablo, which he said was good and just needed a few more polishes. I pledged to also do better and present to him soon a finished work., I don't know but getting comments from a master whether its good or bad felt like music to my ears. Unfortunately his came came. I'm still shocked but now writing this blog post as the final tribute and also to share my experience with the legend in the industry. Was it coincidence that Petrang Kabayo was made into a movie again and Juanita Banana a afternoon series just this year? It was a very greaceful exit for Mang Pablo and hope that his legacy lives on, and I promise to live that way.
Thank You Mang Pablo...
Your corporal body might have faded
But the soul of your works and your name
lives in eternity!

KOMIKS INTERBYU: Silent Sanctum Manga
Todays KOMIK INTERBYU, we will now feature indie komiks Silent Sanctum Manga! They are actually a group of artists, but they speak as one, well more heads are better than one!
When did you started making komiks?
2007, ang pinakagoal lang back then was to join KOMIKON.At pumuntang BAHAY NG ALUMNI.The world domination thing came much later...
Who/What were your inspirations in making one?
Oh most definitely CULTURE CRASH.Both in format and art style.
And what manga group would be without being influenced by the likes of AKIRA TORIYAMA and YOSHIHIRO TOGASHI.And syempre kung girl mangaka ka...si MR.S NAOKO TAKEUCHI! Basically yung mga cartoons & animes na napapanood namin growing up(He-man,centurions,hanna-barbera stuff,Battle Ball, Super Boink,Voltes V,etc.)...malaki ang impact both visually at sa mga story telling namin.
Do you make scribbles while in class?
Yeah...all the time! Most especially at MATH CLASS.Kaya nga kami bumabagsak e hehehe...
What creation is the one you are most proud of?
Silent Sanctum Manga 3,for the our WORLD WIDE contribution to bridge the gap between COMICS and MANGA.
& Silent Sanctum Manga 5.5.,for it was designed to be the CULTURE CRASH tribute issue.
& Silent Sanctum Manga 5.5.,for it was designed to be the CULTURE CRASH tribute issue.
Character wise we are most proud of both KAPTAIN BOMBA and ANGRY MAN.They're the two SSM! Characters that people usually relates to....
Do you feel possessed by your own creations?
Not by our CHARACTERS but more of the ARTISTS that helps us earn a living. There are more times than once that we actually sign important documents(BIR,Bank Statements,Hospital Sheets) under our pen names. We have taken so much pride upon maintaining our counterculture personas that we at times loss track of our real names!Same thing with our BIRTHDAYS,AGE,etc. In a way, if we're going out as SILENT SANCTUM MANGA we try to seperate the LIVING PERSONS from the ARTISTS.
If one of your characters will be made into a live action series, who is it and who will play the role?
Takeshi Kaneshiro for ONI NADEGIRI
Danny DeVito for BUNNY-PON
Dolph Lundgren for KAPTAIN BOMBA
coz IVAN DRAGO was the shiznits!!!!

Where you want to see your comics 5 years from now?
Enslaving mankind...mercilessly whipping people to build our STATUES and MONUMENTS...We kid of course....
But we'd be more that happy continuing what we do now.
But with a wealthy sponsor,a self sustaining income and enough dough to sponsor up and coming indie artists.

Any plans to publish your work in another language other than Filipino or English?
We actually used a little BISAYA on our first issue. And quite frankly we have grown to love the dialect for it's "malambing" like
nature. We'd most definitely love the idea of our works being translated in several filipino dialects but at times it's more of the "WILL THEY ACTUALLY LIKE IT" part that we're worried about. And since we're currentlty using TAGALOG,KOREAN,THAI or HINDI wouldn't sound so foreign either. We would like to keep it fresh in the same way if we'd see our book at a foreign country...WE'D WANNA BUY IT!Not because we're in it...but more likely we'd wanna learn how they translated the stories and how some of our jokes and puns would look in the eyes of our foreigner friends.

Are you willing to cosplay one of your characters?
Yes,I wouldn't mind cosplaying as BUNNY-PON since I already have to body for it...
Did you fell in love with one of your works?
You don't actually fall in love with a "certain" work. But you tend to fall in love with everything you've done. I think that is the driving force for any creation. So to choose favorites would be very difficult for us.

KOMIKS INTERBYU:
Todays KOMIK INTERBYU, we will now feature indie komiks writer MAIKA EZAWA!
When did you started making komiks?
I really can't say when. I've been writing stories before. Mark 9:47 is my first story made into komiks. So I guess since the birth of Mark I've making comics, that's probably around 2007 :D
Who/What were your inspirations in making one?
It all started with manga. I continue to get inspirations from komiks and manga, also in movies. Sometimes just things that occur with me or someone I know impacts my stories.
Do you make scribbles while in class?
At times, when I don't have someone to talk to. It's either that or fall asleep.
What creation is the one you are most proud of?
Mark 9:47. It is a challenge writing this one. It is something out of my comfort zone. But I enjoyed writing and I'm proud of it. Besides, I like Visdei.
Do you feel possessed by your own creations?
Possessed? Haha! I can be absorbed at times with my works.
If one of your characters will be made into a live action series, who is it and who will play the role?
It's definitely Visdei. Portrayed by Hugh Jackman.
Where you want to see your comics 5 years from now?
Wish I can see it publish and spread throughout the country. I think anyone would like to see their work like that in 5 years.
Any plans to publish your work in another language other than Filipino or English?
Not really thinking about it right now. I wouldn't mind if someone would offer that, including shouldering the expenses. ahaha!
Are you willing to cosplay one of your characters?
Why not? Tepai's character designs are awesome.
Did you fell in love with one of your works?
I love my works. It's the playground of my imagination.

KOMIKS INTERBYU: Tepai Pascual
For todays KOMIK INTERBYU, we will now feature indie komik creator TEPAI PASCUAL!
When did you started making komiks?
I started making comics when I was a kid maybe 4-5 years old. It's was just some doodles, four panels in one page and about mermaids. hahaha.
Who/What were your inspirations in making one?
During those times, I always see my older sister reading "The Adventures of Tin Tin" tapos, yung kapit bahay ko, Archie comics naman. Then namulat ako sa anime nung mga grade 3 tapos nung grade 6, I bought my first manga. Rurouni Kenshin at Fushigi Yuugi pa yun. Ever since naman, manga style na ang ginagawa ko bilang may something about marvel/dc are for boys and anime are for girls--kasi sailormoon palang ang pinakasikat non. hahaha

Do you make scribbles while in class?
YES!!! I do. 75% of the class, I doodle on my notebook or any paper for that matter. masmadaming doodle ang notebook ko kaysa sa notes.
What creation is the one you are most proud of?
My thesis --MAKTAN 1521. It's the first graphic novel that I made na TAPOS at in FULL COLOR. And it's been featured in SULYAP that will be released this November 13, 2010. [nag-plug?!?]
Do you feel possessed by your own creations?
If one of your characters will be made into a live action series, who is it and who will play the role?
O_O hmmm... Wala na akong makitang purong Pilipino na pwede kay lapulapu. pero kung mamimili ako for the sake na kelangan kong mamili, It's either, Jericho Rosales, Cesar Montano o si Piolo Pascual (kaso masyado nang maganda si Piola, pero kung gusto kong kumita sa pelikula, why not?) hahahahah!
Where you want to see your comics 5 years from now?
Any plans to publish your work in another language other than Filipino or English?
Both MARK9 verse 47 and MAKTAN 1521. hahahah!
Are you willing to cosplay one of your characters?
Ako? hinde. XD mahirap. maghahire nalang ako.
Did you fell in love with one of your works?
Every work i do is a product of my love for what i do. :D
