Review: The Ultmate Anime Guide by SFX

We were at the Barnes & Noble store in Frederick which I usually try to shop once a month. They usually have one of my fav mags called NEO which is out of the UK. I found the recent one (Issue 85), but also find something else in the magazine displays. "The Ultimate Guide to Anime Special SFX Edition".

It was a sealed folder that had the following inserted:
  • The Ultimate Guide to Anime (132 pages)
  • Magnets of Naruto
  • DVD of the first 3 episodes of Sacred Blacksmith
  • Double-sided Movie Poster
I got all this for $18.99 plus tax which I thought was a good deal. I wanted to see what this "Ultimate Guide' was all about as I was wondering what it covered. I can't say this is the "Ultimate", but it had some nice articles. It had the some nice write ups of Naruto, Akira and Evangelion 2.22. They also have several reviews of anime and books. Some articles are short, while others are in great detail. It even has a sample of manga called Twelfth Night which was done by Williams Shakespeare. Not too sure about a manga done in Olde English, but the artwork is well done for the series.

I soon discovered that most of the articles were written by the same people. You had Andrew Osmond (who I swear wrote 80% of the articles) and Jonathan Clements . Never seen so much written by one person in a magazine.

If you were a Studio Ghibli fan, I would definitely recommend this. It had no less than 4 articles on the studio, the music and the shows produced I really enjoyed reading about the Cécile Corbel, who is the person that did the music for 'Arrietty'. It was interesting seeing how she got involved in the creating the music for the anime.

My wife loves fridge magnets and has them up already. I have the poster showing 'Summer Wars' (other side was 'The Girl who Leapt through Time') hanging over my computer desk.

The only issue was the DVD of Sacred Blacksmith. Since this was a UK magazine, this was actually in Region 1. After some minor tweaks to some things, I was able to watch this on my computer. This is a pretty cool anime and I may actually get the remainder of the series to watch after seeing this.

Besides that bit of a setback, I still feel this was a worth while purchase.  I am a tad upset by the title since this was not really what you would of thought of reading the cover. I have to say though, even I know it was not really going to be an 'ultimate guide'.

I did get introduced to a new anime called Redline. This may have to be added to my watch list and see if it is worth the hype.

Nascar vs SuperGT 300 Racing

What crazy person would try to compare 2 different types of racing. Even ones that are oceans a part - well me of course.

There has been much to do with the recent SuperGT 300 racing this year in Japan. It seems that the Otaku fans have more to do than just watch anime and read manga. They now have the SuperGT 300 racing circuit that may catch an eye or two.

Now Nascar tried this not too long ago or was that Cartoon Network primarily. There were some movies and game themed cars.

It was more of a ply to get the kids interested and spend money on the 24 scale cars . Not that they were that cool. Hell, even when I tried to find them on the web, it kept getting hits for the toys than the real cars. Maybe if they got the other 100 minor sponsor stickers off them, they would be much more cooler.

Not lets jump to the head of the class and check out this years SuperGT 300 cars. I think they did a stunning job on these designs, but my favorite so far is Miku. Ikamusume though came in at a very close second as well.

I have some great photos below showcasing the cars and the ever popular Racing Queens. Now this will get me to definitely come the race track - but I think I will need some spare memory sticks and batteries O-O

Good Smile Companies Miku Hatsune is a BMW Z4

Pacific NAC Ikamusume is a Ferrari F430

Apple Evangelion RT TEST TYPE-01 is a Mooncraft Shiden MC/RT-16

Direction's Evangelion RT Production MODEL-02 is a PORSCHE 911GT3

Hankook Racing Haruhi is a Porsche 911

Sorry, now Race Queens - whats up with that !

As you can see, there is much to do with the SuperGT 300 racing. From the news reports, the last race was won by Good Smile Company.

Happy Father's Day

Well another year being a Dad and what a wild ride it always has been. Can't undo the safety belt yet as it is starting to climb the tracks to another roller coaster ride.

Plan to grab my son and meet my Dad at Bob Evan's Resturant for Breakfast oday. Three Generations of 'boys' having breakfast and talking about 'stuff'. It should be fun, but I am sure my son will be the most active talker. Never seems to be quiet, even when watching anime *sign*

Her is hopig that you are having a fun day with your family and remembering 'Good Olde Dad' today where ever he may be.

Here is something borrowed from Naruto Shippuden Episode 168 when he meets his Dad (Minato). I just hope that I can be as inspiring to my son as he was with his.

As we all do - have faith in our children!
